Under 1700-talet besöktes Europas kungliga hov av en italiensk magiker, ockultist, spåman, helare och alkemist vid namn greve Alessandro di Cagliostro. För oss cyniker kommer det kanske inte som någon större överraskning att greven egentligen hette Giuseppe Balsamo och kom från en fattig samt exceptionellt icke-grevlig familj i Palermo.
